New Club Sponsor

Rotolo Chevrolet

Pomona Valley Corvettes is proud to announce Rotolo Chevrolet as our new sponsor. At our December general club meeting we had a unanimous vote for Rotolo Chevrolet.

We are honored to partner with this highly regarded dealership. Rotolo has welcomed us with open arms and we are grateful for their support.

2012 is our clubs 50th anniversary and Rotolo just celebrated their dealerships 40th anniversary. We are looking forward to a long relationship together.

Preliminary Talks with Rotolo

Recently Ernie C., Phil, Charlie, Kim and I met with Bill Waddingham of Rotolo Chevrolet. Bill also introduced us to couple of the managers in service and parts. We had a complete tour of the facility, which is very clean and modern. Bill and his managers were very personable and several times said they would really like to be our sponsor. They have offered to have an open house at the dealership sometime after Thanksgiving (since the place will be decorated for the holidays) for the club.

The dealership territory is Fontana and Rancho north of Foothill, so if we want to include them in an event in Victoria Gardens they could in fact participant. If you recall Richard Hibbard was not suppose to go to Upland back when we were having our car show.

One item we discussed was the idea of service being so far east for some people. They said that they now have 2 vans and they would not have a problem giving anyone a ride home. Phil had pointed out that La Verne was a little outside their shuttle circle – they said not for the club they would go anyplace. It might not be in 10 minutes but they would get you home. We asked could they supply a loaner car for those way out of the area if the car was going to be in for an extended period. He said they would consider it, there is an Enterprise very close, he will get back to us on that issue.

They said standard discount for the club members would 15% on parts and service.

They can work on any and all GM vehicles. They do install some aftermarket parts. For any club members who are interested in buying a car the member would deal directly with Michael Caposio the general manager, and possible their internet sales person.

We also spoke of extra things for example: new car flags for each member with the 50th logo and now the Rotolo logo, would they help fund that and he thought that was a good idea. We spoke about the “50th” jacket idea that I was working on with Richard Hibbard and Rosemary. Again he thought that was a good idea. The key was he said they did not want some large sponsorship to be cast in stone as a annual thing, rather a base with special projects was good. He said their goal would be to exceed our expectation. I believe him on this point.

One example of his openness was he mention that if the club was doing a hay ride or toy drive and needed a couple of Silverado trucks to carry the toys or pull the hay wagons – that they could loan them to us. I thought immediately of the Morro Bay where we might want to have a van for the wine tour or to carry wine home. What he said was they would help us out at no cost.

They do currently sponsor the Inland Valley Corvette Club – I believe this is the club that broke off from Corvettes West.

Final point, we asked about items for our monthly raffle and he said no problem. An oil change (Mobile 1 – they showed us their stack of cases of the stuff) and some other stuff (hats, clocks, etc.) would be no problem.

Your Front Alignment Specs

Driving A Road Course: Consider “Toe Out” In Your Front Alignment Specs?

by James Prunty

As most C6 owners know, our cars come with a lot of negative camber.  The front wheels try to turn inward when using negative camber due to camber thrust.  I’m not sure why, but I don’t want to second guess the guys in the white lab coats in Detroit.  However, if you’ve been to a road course with your car, you know that the inside treads take a real beating.

First, you need to know a little about Ackerman.

In this drawing you can see the RED lines.  This shows both tires parallel to each other, and perpendicular to the OUTSIDE tires radius.  Since the outside tire is doing 70% of the work, we will consider it the baseline.

As you can see in the drawing, the INSIDE tire is AHEAD of the outside tire, relative to the apex of the corner.Because of this, the inside tire is NOT perpendicular to its’ radius.  Therefore, the inside tire is actually FIGHTING the outside tire.  In other words.  The inside tire isn’t turning as tightly as the outside tire.

ACKERMAN is a term that describes the line that I’ve colored BLUE.  This is the true perpendicular to the inside tires’ radius, and the THEORETICAL direction the inside tire should be turning.  In a perfect world, the inside tire would turn more than the outside tire, BUT be parallel to each other when going straight.  Except for some of the new active steering, products coming on the market, this just isn’t possible.

By running a little TOE OUT, you cheat.  In other words, you may increase a little bit of drag on the straight, but when you start your turn, the inside tire is able to do more of the work.  Especially at initial turn in (before all of the load shifts to the outside tire), this gives both tires more initial bite.  TOE OUT is a way to give yourself a bit of quasi-Ackerman in the corners, although it does cause a bit of straight line drag.  Since most of you reading this like big HP V8’s, that drag is small compared to the increase in grip.

You can do about 1/8” of Toe Out MAX.  I like 1/16” in most cases.

Merry Christmas !

Reprinted From Bill Overton:

‘Twas the night before Christmas and out in the garage,

There wasn’t a trace of a Honda, a Toyota or even a Dodge.

The presents were wrapped and the lights were all lit,

So I figured I’d mess with my Corvette for a bit.

I popped the release and I lifted the hood,

When a deep voice behind me said “looks pretty good.”

Well, as you can imagine, I turned mighty quick,

And there, by the workbench, stood good ol Saint Nick!

We stood there a bit, not too sure what to say,

Then he said “don’t suppose that you’d trade for my sleigh?

I said “no way, Santa” and started to grin,

“But if you’ve got the time we could go for a spin!”

His round little mouth, all tied up like a bow,

Turned into a smile and he said “hey! Let’s go!!”

We opened the doors to claim our seat,

I could not wait to hear the Big Block’s beat.

I turned the key to bring the Vette to life,

The engine noise pierced the air like a knife.

The sound that erupted took him by surprise,

But he liked it a lot, by the look in his eyes.

With Goodyear’s a’ screaming and side pipes aglow,

We headed on out where the hot rodders go.

And Santa’s grin widened, approaching his ears,

With every shift as I banged through the gears.

Then he yelled “can’t recall when I’ve felt so alive!”

So I backed off the gas and asked Santa if he wanted to drive.

Ol Santa was stunned when I gave him the keys,

When he walked past the headlights he shook at the knees!

The Big Block exploded with side pipe sound!

And Santa let out the clutch and the tires shook the ground!

Power shift into second, again into third!

I sat there just watching, at loss for a word,

Then I heard him exclaim as we blasted from sight,

“Merry Christmas to all, it’s one awesome night!!!”

CHIPS For Kids toy drive

Hello everyone,

Today, a small group of us, attended the CHIPS For Kids toy drive at CBS Studio City Broadcast Center in Studio City.  Barbara Potter was invited by CHP Officer Donnell L. Holmes to bring only four Corvettes to CBS to delivery our check for $882 to CHIPS For Kids.  The PVCA members in attendance were Barbara Potter, Randy & Glenda Goff, Steve & Karen Stevens, David & Kimberly Bratt, and myself.  We finally got our 15 seconds of fame in the morning news.  My words were, “I’m Ernie Caraza, President of the Pomona Valley Corvette Association, we are here to present this check for $882 to the CHIPS For Kids fundraiser”.

It was our pleasure to meet Steve Mauldin, President and GM of CBS, Kent Shocknek, Anchor of CBS Morning News, and CHP Officer Donnell L. Holmes, whom we met before.  Donnell gave us a complete tour of the CBS/KCAL Studio.  Kent gave us a complete tour of his news room and explained how everything works.  He put us on camera and took group pictures with him.  Wow, what a wonderful experience.

We also met Ernie Salazar, Special Product Manager for Lexani.  They make custom Lexani Motorcars and Wheels for various vehicles.  He offered PVCA a tour of his facility, so maybe David and Steve can set up a run in the near future to Lexani in Corona.

David and Kimberly then took us to Canter’s Bakery & Deli in Studio City for lunch, very nice, good food and bakery.  FYI, this is Kimberly’s stomping grounds and yes, she is a real “Valley Girl”.

Lastly, Charlie and Carol will try to arrange for someone from SHOES THAT FIT to attend our next general meeting on Dec 13th, so that we can present them with their check for $882.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you,

Ernie Caraza

President Message

Dear Fellow PVCA Members,

November was a very busy month for us with the PVCA Elections, club events, trying to find a new meeting location, trying to find a new Sponsor to replace Richard Hibbard, and also with the beginning of the Holidays.  I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving Holiday with their love ones.  However, November is now over and with just a few weeks left in December for the end of all PVCA events.  I do see daylight out of the tunnel.

Starting off with the Election Committee, I would like to thank Steve Stevens and Robert C. Potter for handling the elections this year.  Congratulations to the new PVCA E-Board for 2012, they are:

Phil Caughey, President
Erika Hernandez, Vice President
Randy Goff, Membership
Roxanne Wittwer, Secretary
Kimberly Bratt, Treasurer
Rosemary Rodriguez, Activities Director
Charlie Lipscomb, NCCC Governor

As for the Homecomings in November, we had the last one at Ganesha H.S.   PVCA is expected to gross $2,400 in Homecomings this year, which is a record breaker, outstanding. Thanks again to David and Kimberly Bratt for all their hard work and dedication with this Chair and everyone else who participated in this program.

November was the last month for the Car of the Year program, chaired by Joe and Erika Hernandez.    The October winner was Randy Goff who won a $25 Gift Certificate to the Olive Garden.  The November inspection was Engine Compartment.  Thank you, Joe and Erika for all of your hard work with this Chair throughout this year.  You are both greatly appreciated.  The winners for 2011 are as follows:

Men’s Car of the Year, Danny Rodriguez
Men’s Hard Charger, Ernie Caraza

Women’s Car of the Year, Kimberly Bratt
Women’s Hard Charger, Pat Esqueda

Our Special 2012 Blast to the Past Committee made more progress in November.  Several runs are already scheduled in the 2012 calendar, please sign up.  You can also now order PVCA club attire with the new 2012 logo from Derek Pulos.  This committee is chaired by Rosemary & Dan Rodriguez and Kevin & Debbie Jones, thank you all for your hard work with this committee.  We will have a lot more news in December.

As you may already know, we lost Richard Hibbard as our Sponsor on November 15th.  Since then, Ron Zurek made contact with Bill Waddingham, VP of Rotolo and arrange for us to meet with Bill.  Paul Cope, Charlie Lipscomb, Kimberly Bratt, Phil Caughey, and myself met with Bill Waddingham-VP, Michael Caposio-GM, and Jim Schultz-Parts & Service Director of Rotolo Chevrolet.  We had a very positive meeting and complete tour of the entire dealership and parted with Bill telling us that they want to be our sponsor.  Debbie Jones also made a good effort to contact Mark Christopher and tried to set up a meeting with them, without success.  Therefore, this E-Board voted to accept Rotolo Chevrolet as our new sponsor and will bring this up to the members for their final approval.  Please be sure to attend Dec 13th general meeting.

Next, the New Meeting Location Committee which consists of Art Ramirez, Barbara Potter, and myself made more progress in November.  We checked out the Pasta Cucina Rustica, an Italian cuisine in La Verne, suggested by Phil Caughey.  This restaurant has possibilities, please take time to visit for lunch or dinner for your own observations.  We now have two possibilities, Joey’s BBQ in Pomona and Pasta Cucina Rustica in La Verne.  If you have any questions or suggestions concerning this task, please contact Art, Barbara, or myself.  We will be reporting the progress of this task via email and not during our meetings at Casa de Salsa.

Lastly, as you may already know, Randy Goff and Gary Stillwell were hospitalized and have now recovered, thank God.  However, Jerry Coble is still hospitalized for broken vertebrates due to a fall.  Ansel Boyce is also very ill.  Let’s keep Jerry, Ansel, and all of our members with illnesses in our prayers for speedy recoveries.

President Message

Dear Fellow PVCA Members,

Well folks, October is now gone and this year is almost over with the Holidays just around the corner. As you know, PVCA Election Day is scheduled for November 8th and our 2012 membership dues are due before the start of this meeting. Also, be sure to bring your ballot to this meeting and submit them to Steve Stevens or Robert C. Potter. If you cannot attend this meeting, you may vote by Absentee Ballot.

I would like to take this time to thank Erika Hernandez for her outstanding work as Activities Director, as she has made a big difference this year. Just look at our calendar, and I’ve been told by many members of what a great job Erika has done for PVCA.

October was a fun month with all of the wonderful events in our calendar. Starting off, we had the 4th Toyota Speedway @ Irwindale races, which are always fun with the Women’s Demolition Derby at the end. Ten members attended this event.

Next, was the Ferris Bueller run to Idyllwild with 23 members in attendance, 7 members canceled due to rain forecast. Boy, did we loose out, there was no rain and everyone who went enjoyed the run, had a wonderful time and a great lunch together.

October was another slow month for Car Shows. First, there was the usual Breakfast and Car Rally @ Johnny Rockets, where we get together and chat, have breakfast, and enjoy the show. Juan Ortega won two Raffle prizes, and “Yours’ Truly” me, winning Best of Show with my Prowler, a raffle prize, and 50/50.

Second, there was the 29th Annual All Chevy Car Show @ Richard Hibbard with 25 members in attendance. As usual, we all have a great time, lots of food and drink. Congratulations to our following winning PVCA winners:
C3 Modified, Class Winner – Erika Hernandez
C5 Stock, Class Winner – Ginny Bender
C5 Stock, Class Runner Up – Corrine Papaioanu
C5 Modified, Class Runner Up – Bill Tefend
C6 Stock, Class Winner – Del Bender
C6 Stock, Class Runner Up – Nick Papaioanu
C6 Modified, Class Winner – Ernie Caraza
Winner of the 50/50 was Sheena Caughey

Last of the car shows was the Wild West Car Show in Victorville, with 14 members in attendance. There were over 100 Classics and Corvettes in attendance. Once again we all had a great time and greeted other NCCC members from other Corvette clubs. Congratulations to the “Top 10” winners, of which three were PVCA members:
Joe & Erika Hernandez with their C3 Modified Corvette
Dan & Pat Esqueda with their C5 Stock Corvette
Bill Tefend with his C5 Modified Corvette

There was also the Two Autocrosses in Lompoc, CA which were hosted by the Vapor Trail Vettes and the Newport Harbor Corvettes. This was strictly for the “Wanna Be” racers, with six PVCA members in attendance. This event was an NCCC event and I understand brings a lot of points for PVCA. What do we do with all these points you might ask, please ask Charlie Lipscomb, our NCCC Governor.

October was a real busy month for Homecomings. PVCA participated in the following Homecomings: Los Altos HS, Chaffey HS, Colony HS, Pomona HS (new this year), and Claremont HS which was actually a Parade through the streets of Claremont. This is my first year helping out with Homecomings and found them to be really nice and we always meet somewhere for a late dinner. Thanks again, David and Kimberly Bratt for all your hard work with this Chair. PVCA is expected to gross over $2,200 in Homecomings this year, which is a record breaker, outstanding.

PVCA also participated in Operation Cupid which consisted of ten couples of our young servicemen and servicewomen who married during this event. PVCA helped with parading the grooms through the streets of Rancho and to the Marriot Hotel. PVCA ladies helped with organizing and coordinating the reception. There was lots of food and drink and we all ate too much, of course, no one rides for free, just kidding.

Let’s not forget the PVCA ladies, who participated in the Race to Beauty 360, coordinated by Debbie Jones. There were 21 ladies who participated with “No Men” allowed. I still do not know who took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Stock & Modified??? That concludes the events in October.

The Car of the Year program continues to do well with Joe and Erika Hernandez coordinating this Chair. The September winner was “Yours’ Truly” me, who won a $25 certificate to Subway. That’s a lot of $5 foot longs, lunch for a week, thank you for the donation. The October inspection was the driver’s side interior and the winner will be announced in the Nov 8th meeting. Be prepared for the last white glove and Q-tip inspection for this year by Joe and Erika on Nov 8th. Thank you both for all your hard work with this Chair. You are both greatly appreciated.

Our Special 2012 Blast to the Past Committee made more progress during October. Several runs are already scheduled for next year, just look at the 2012 calendar and start signing up. You can also now order PVCA club attire with the new 2012 logo from Derek Pulos. This committee is chaired by Rosemary & Dan Rodriguez and Kevin & Debbie Jones, thank you all for your hard work with this committee. We will have a lot more news in November.

Please be advised that we are still looking for a new meeting location. This committee now consists of Art Ramirez, Barbara Potter, and myself. I am helping out to accomplish this task since Randy Goff decided to opt out. If you have any questions or suggestions concerning this task, please contact Art, Barbara, or myself. We will be reporting the progress of this task at every General Meeting.

Lastly, as you probably already know, Randy Goff was in the hospital, in ICU for a severe case of the Flu. Let’s keep all of our members with illnesses in our prayers for speedy recoveries.

Ernie Caraza

OPERATION CUPID

Cupid descends on military couples
By Jannise Johnson, Staff Writer
Created: 10/29/2011 07:15:42 PM PDT

There were tears, laughter and plenty of smiles Saturday afternoon as 10 couples took their vows in front of the Ontario Hilton Hotel.

The soldiers, who’ve recently returned from Iraq or Afghanistan or will soon be deployed, were celebrated with free weddings and honeymoons as part of Operation Community Cupid.

Jamil Jones’ twin brother Jamal married Coast Guard pilot La’Shanda Holmes.

“It’s amazing that they were able to pull this off,” Jones said of the event and its organizers. “They’ve done so much for all the people involved. And it’s great that they did this for her (Holmes) being that she’s in the Coast Guard and so many of them are veterans.”

Organizers for the nonprofit Community Cupid project

Shaun Baily, of the US Navy, kisses his newly wedded bride Alison after exchanging wedding vows Saturday, October 29, 2011, at Ontario Airport Hilton Hotel in Ontario. (Jennifer Cappuccio Maher/Staff Photographer)began planning the event 10 weeks ago, inspired buy the chance to pay tribute to the soldiers’ sacrifices.
Their mission: organize a one-mile parade of veteran organizations and marching bands, give the couples the VIP treatment and provide them with free wedding gowns, tuxedoes, limousines, flowers, cakes and more.

They got that on Saturday.

The parade started at Haven Avenue and Arrow Highway, went south to Inland Empire Boulevard in Ontario and headed east to the Hotel.

The brides were outfitted and prepared during that time in a room set aside in the hotel.

After the ceremony began, each couple had a few minutes in the spotlight, as various pastors performed their weddings.

The event had all the romance of a single wedding multiplied.

Couples and their bridesmaids and groomsmen arrived in a limo. Each wedding party walked down a rose petal-strewn white walkway where they ascended the stairs to a stage for the actual ceremony.

Angel Rodriguez was best man for Marine Sgt. Jose Herrera. Rodriguez, also a Marine, spoke about their commitment to the military and the country a few minutes before his friend’s nuptuals.

“Nobody is making us serve,” Rodriguez said. “This is an all-volunteer military. I can speak for Jose. We love being Marines.”

The 10 couples – with the military person listed first and the names of their fiance following:

Marine Corporal Victor Martinez and Erika Acevedo; Coast Guard pilot La’Shanda Holmes and Jamal Jones; Marine Lance Cpl. Emerson Alex Rodriguez and Melissa Moore; Marine Sgt. David Castillo and Maritza Alvarado; Marine Pfc. Kevius Tamagyow and Jayline Dugwem; Marine Lance Cpl. Anthony Stewart Roldan and Rosa Rivera; Coast Guard Marine Science Technician and Petty Officer 2nd Class Jennifer E. Donnely and Raymond Jennings; and Marine E-3 Thomas Wright and Rocel Basco. Navy E-8 Sean Bailey and his bride Alison Bailey and Marine Sgt. Jose G. Herrera and his bride Australia Herrera repeated their vows in the wedding. The two couples merely married in simple court ceremonies before the military men were deployed. Community Cupid was created by Inland Empire Business Journal Publisher Bill Anthony and Ryan Orr, founder of Operation Community Cares. It includes volunteer, corporate and business support.
