In 1977, the ’62 received its first face lift. The car received new interior, a
paint job, a new engine and transmission. One major change to the body was the
hood scoop due to the large intake and carburetor. The ’62 never lost a race in
its class during an NCCC race, with one exception. After the transformation, we
raced the car at an event in Tulsa, Oklahoma and won. However, the car was not
performing its usual times and I was complaining to everyone about the track
being slick. What I did not realize was the positraction rear end had lost some
clutches and was not working. I was only using one tire, not both. NO ONE seemed
to notice. The next race was at an NCCC event that our Corvette Club put on and
I was the Chairman of the car show. I had no time to check the car and I was off
to the drags. The car was beat by one of my friends in a fuel injected 1959
Corvette. What beat the ’62 was that broken positraction rear end.
In September 1977, the 1962 was joined by Carol’s first Corvette, a 1978 Silver
Anniversary model. We did not know it at the time, but Carol was pregnant with
our daughter, Kimberly. Needless to say, that was the most exciting news in our
lives. The Corvette was delivered in March of 1978 and Kim entered our lives in
June, 1978. We could always gauge how old the Corvette was by Kim’s age. We sold
the 1978 Silver Anniversary Corvette in 2000 to my sister, Carol, for what we
had paid for it in 1978. Kimberly loved that car and wants me to buy it back one
day. Kimberly grew up with Corvettes, Corvette parades and events. She was a
small baby, but went to several drag races and never even knew she was there. In
fact, we used to heat up her baby food on the engine block. We purchased a
custom van and towed the ’62 to events. Kim always enjoyed the van, due to its
large size and sleeping beds.
My company promoted me in February, 1983, and we moved to sunny California. I
traveled about 80% of the time and missed our friends from the Corvette Club in
St. Louis. So, being the adrenaline junky that I am, I started flying lessons. I
felt the need for speed and an airplane could go faster than my Corvette. I
received my flying license and enjoyed it for many years. The company decided
that I was not working hard enough (yeah right) and decided to promote me yet
again. Now, I traveled 90% of the time. In June of 2006, I decided to order a
new 2007 Corvette and it arrived in September. I retired in May, 2007, after
thirty-six years with the company, and we joined the Pomona Valley Corvette
Association.
There are many other stories that I may divulge to you one day, in addition to
the few that I have mentioned already. Some day I will share my many adventures
in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Believe me when I say, the police do not miss me or
my brother racing around town. The Lipscomb boys ruled the City of Medicine
Lodge and they still speak of us today. We changed several City Ordinances due
to our antics. We thought up trouble they could not even imagine.
Thank you for letting me serve the Pomona Valley Corvette Association.
